The Thing is an upcoming 2011 science fiction horror film directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., written by Eric Heisserer, and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton in the lead roles. It is a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter film of the same name. Matthijs's film will take place right before the first film, it focuses on the original Norwegian crew that discovered the alien. It revolves around an American researcher named Dr. Kate Lloyd and a group of researchers arriving in Antarctica to assist the research with the Norwegian Outpost crew, however they later discovered an alien spacecraft along with its passenger frozen solid. A simple lab test later caused the alien to be revived from its frozen prison, now that the alien is loose, everyone must work together before it assimilates and kill everyone in the outpost one by one and stop it from reaching the mainland.
