Captain J.F. Blake was an American soldier and commanding officer of the Arctic Marines' Bravo team. The character is the main protagonist of the 2002 video-game The Thing, during which he investigates the fate of U.S. Outpost 31. He is portrayed by voice actor Per Solli.

History

Investigation

Blake is a United States military officer assigned by his superior Colonel Whitley to investigate the Outpost 31 after losing contact with them for several days. With no confirmed survivors, Whitley orders Blake to demolish the camp with C4 explosives and return to base. After losing contact with Alpha Team, who were assigned to investigate the nearby Norwegian Outpost, Blake insists that he be dropped there to assist the team and rescue survivors, as he is the only one that can speak Norwegian. He arrives at the ruins of the outpost and meets up with Carter and Cruz, he also faced the Thing beasts along the way. He then encounters Pierce who was paranoid at the time, Pierce ordered Blake to collect blood test kits in order to reveal if he is human or an imitation, Blake's test proves that he is human, but the test on the others prove that they are imitations, Blake and Pierce killed the imitations and proceed to the next facility. Blake lost Pierce in the snow, he then meets up with Pace who was throwing grenades at him and Williams who was in the mess hall. Blake and the others secured themselves in an abandoned post where they are ambushed by the Thing beasts, after fending them off, he spotted the Radio Man that attacked Pace and Williams earlier, but the Norwegian locked himself in the warehouse. Blake eventually reunites with Pierce who committed suicide shortly after wards. Blake found the Radio Man, however he was already mutated into a Thing beast and manage to kill it, Blake then rescued Dr. Faraday, the researcher working for Gen Inc. that was researching on the Thing.

Conspiracy

While on their way back to the surface, Blake and his team are ambushed by a mysterious group of armed soldiers. Col. Whitley then reveals himself to be the mastermind behind the Thing research which caused the death of Alpha Team. Blake tries to subdue Whitley in a furious rage, but he is quickly sedated and transported to the research facility. Blake wakes up and fights his way through both the Thing beasts and Whitley's troops; he escapes the facility before it is destroyed by a time bomb. Blake then proceeds into Whitley's Military Outpost and destroys Whitley's cargo planes in order to prevent him from flying the Thing out of Antarctica. Blake then ventures into an underground section of the outpost, which also serves as Gen Inc's munitions laboratory, however, the outpost was set to self destruct. Luckily, Blake manages to reach the surface via an elevator and chases Whitley through snow fields. Blake confronts Whitley in the Test Field and says the words, "Game over, Whitley." before he shoots a couple of oil drums near Whitley and sets him on fire; to which Whitley calmly responds, "I don't think so. I control you. Right now, I control every man on this continent. Your pathetic sabotage at the consignment at the airstrip only delayed the inevitable. There is an evac team on its way to this location. Once I take the chopper, I will begin global infection. Game over!? This game is just beginning." Blake then receives assistance from an unnamed helicopter pilot and defeats the Cloud B4 carrier, the pilot reveals himself to be R.J. MacReady and the two presumably escape the Antarctic via helicopter.

Personality

Blake is a natural-born leader with a bad attitude and a worse mouth. A trained soldier, Blake isn't the type to show what he feels very often and he never backs down. But when faced with a situation he doesn't quite understand, his natural reaction is to lash out, sometimes violently. His bond is to his men. Each time he loses a team member, a little piece of him dies. Slowly but surely, he's just letting himself become the Thing he hunts. He's a man on a mission; you're either with him or in his way.

Field of work

  • Blake is a mix all of the other teammates ability's:
  1. He can heal the team, however the medic is recommended over your ability because you have a limited amount of Health Packs.
  2. Blake can fix Basic Junction boxes however the Engineer can fix the basic ones and the Advanced ones, so a Engineer over comes that ability.
  3. Finally, Blake is mostly like the soldier unit, however this field of work kind of depends on the player, if the player cant really play so well or has aiming difficulties, the Soldier does a good job of actually shooting and does a good job as a soldier since he has best weapon accuracy and greatest courage.

Trivia

  • During the course of the game it is implied that Blake is immune to assimilation by the Thing. According to notes left by Dr. Faraday, is possible that he has developed an immunity from coming into contact with the Thing.
